A very frazzled Magni found rooms in the palace for us all – even, to his great dismay, Njál. Dinner had already been served, but the kitchen sent trays of food to our rooms.

I ate my fill and drew a bath. Then, certain I wouldn’t be able to sleep a wink for worrying about what Geir might decide overnight, I settled into bed.

And promptly fell into a deep and dreamless sleep that lasted until well into the next morning.

A short time later, a bright faced girl brought me a breakfast tray, and after that, a smiling matron knocked on the door with fresh clothes in hand.

“Mr. Magni advised me that you might need a change of clothes. On the road for several months, I understand?”

“Not quite that long. But clothes would be great.”

She nodded, laying an armful of garments out on the bed. “Now, these may be a little loose, but I thought loose is better than tight. You can always use a belt. And of course we can get someone up to take in the seams if we need to. There we are.”

She paused for breath, glancing me over. “Yes, I think that will work. You’re a mage, aren’t you?”

I nodded. “Apprentice.”

“Ohh, how exciting. Mr. Magni says you’re here on secret business, from the king himself.”

Mister Magni needs to keep his mouth shut, I thought. Aloud, I said, “I can’t really talk about that.”

Her eyes gleamed with excitement, but she nodded. “I understand. Believe me, I understand. You don’t work in the palace for as long as I have without knowing when to keep your mouth closed, I can promise you that. ‘Loose lips sink ships,’ like my old pa used to say. He was in the navy, you understand.”

The woman prattled on, arranging my room around me, straightening the bed, picking up my discarded clothes, and so on.

By time she’d finished, I’d learned all about her father the sailor, two brothers who had gone to sea as fishermen, and a grandmother who had owned her own fishing rig back in the day. I’d learned that she had already cleaned the rooms of two lords, a jarl and the head of a mercantile empire.

But as she slipped out the door, I realized I still didn’t know her name.

Yawning, I took a sip of tea. It was going to be a long day, and if my anonymous housekeeper was anything to go by, I wasn’t quite ready for the levels of enthusiasm floating around the palace.
